Mister Packaging is HUBZone Compliant
Expansion-minded companies are finding out that Southwest California is about more than just affordable land and a motivated and skilled labor pool. That's what Mister Packaging discovered when it decided to settle its business in Anaheim, California years ago.
The foam and wood fabrication and manufacturing company takes advantage of the federally designated HUBZone -- or historically under-utilized business zone -- in Anaheim, which gives certified firms a leg up on defense contracts.
So far the benefits of operating in the HUBZone have allowed the privately held company to significantly increase its military business and add more workers. The company's military business has increased and is expected to increase this year as Mister Packaging promots it's HUBZone affiliation. The special designation makes Mister Packaging eligible for HUBZone-only set-aside contracts.
The HUBZone Empowerment Contracting Program stimulates economic development and creates jobs in urban and rural communities by providing Federal contracting preferences to small businesses. These preferences go to small businesses that obtain HUBZone (Historically Underutilized Business Zone) certification in part by employing staff who live in a HUBZone. The company must also maintain a "principal office" in one of these specially designated areas.
To qualify and be compliant for the program, Mister Packaging meets the following criteria:
- It must be a small business by SBA size standards;
- Its principal office must be located within a HUBZone, which includes lands on federally recognized Indian reservations;
- It must be owned and controlled by one or more U.S. citizens; and
- At least 35% of its employees must reside in a HUBZone.
